Freedom Schools-Austin

The CDF Freedom Schools(r) Program came to Austin thanks to the efforts of four people; two members of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and two members of St. James' Episcopal Church. These four attended the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy at CDF Haley Farm in Clinton, TN and became aware of the program.

After many years, and many prayers, Freedom Schools-Austin emerged from the non-profit entity Welcome Table, Inc. (a ministry of St. James' Episcopal Church) in 2014.

The first CDF Freedom Schools site is Oak Springs Elementary School (principal Monica Woods) located in East Austin across from Booker T. Washington Terrace, the largest public housing project in the city of Austin.

The 2014 program met with great success:
*84.2% of the scholars gained in or maintained their reading level from the beginning of the program through the end
*19 scholars demonstrated an 8 1/2- to 9-month increase in instructional reading level
*Word of mouth has led to full enrollment (50 scholars) and a waiting list for 2015

We had even better results during our 2015 program:
*100% of the scholars tested either gained in or maintained their reading level from the beginning of the program through the end and did not experiences summer learning loss
*There was an average increase in instructional reading level of 1 year and 1 month
*We believe we will have an even longer waiting list for the 2016 program

Our 2016 Freedom School runs from June 20th through July 29th.
